It’s been 10 days since the Lekki Toll Gate Massacre, and the only thing that has come out of this ugly event has been litanies of denials from the Lagos State Government and the Nigerian Army as to the fatalities and their involvement in the shooting.
October 20, 2020 was indeed a black Tuesday in the history of Nigeria as the Nigerian Government resorted to brutality against those calling for an end to police brutality.
10 days after the Lekki shootings, this is what we have:
- No official statement as to who ordered the Nigerian army to open fire at peaceful #EndSARS protesters in Lekki.
- No Government official has been sacked following the massacre
- No commemoration for those who died from the shooting
- Not one Government official has been prosecuted
- President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to make an official statement to address the Lekki Toll Gate Massacre.

Below is a timeline of denials from the Nigerian Army and the Lagos State Government.
It’s only fitting that October 20th be honoured as National Protest Day or National Freedom Day in honour of those who were massacred by the Nigerian Army.
This ugly event shouldn’t be swept under the rug like the Bafran Civil War where millions of Nigerians were killed in what has been termed a genocide.
We shouldn’t also forget that those who perpetrated this act were honoured as heroes and major landmarks were renamed after them.

But we will never forget!
The Lekki Toll Gate Massacre won’t follow this trend. The Nigerian Government must be held accountable for the crimes they committed.
