Every week presents a different set of challenges. Regardless of how successful the previous week was, you’d be required to replicate the same level of success or to surpass it.
I’m a big fan of celebrating small wins because of its short term happiness that could often lead to long term motivation.
However, success is often short-lived, especially in marketing and sales where your previous success is your greatest challenge.
Notwithstanding, here are a few weekly affirmations you should tell yourself at the start of every week to boost your motivation. Read along:
1. Today is a new day, last week is in the past
How much break do you think your boss will afford you for meeting last week’s target? None. Absolutely none.
You’ve gotten your handshake and perhaps a little sum of money or recognition amongst your colleagues.
That’s about it. If you don’t put that success behind you and strive for even greater success, you’d definitely get the sticks.
Conversely, last week might be one of those weeks you’d like to expunge off your records. You didn’t meet up with your weekly target and it was from one mistake to the other.
You can’t bring back the past week, but you can make a conscious effort to do better. Access your weak points and work on them.
Last week was bad, this week should take a different turn.
“This is the highest wisdom that I own; freedom and life are earned by those alone who can conquer them each day anew” – Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
2. You’re strong, capable and resilient
If there’s anything you should tell yourself each week, it is this: “I’ve earned the right to be here. I’ve worked hard to get to this position and I’m the best person for this job”.
You may be silently battling imposter syndrome – that feeling that you’re about to be revealed as a total fraud. But you deserve a seat on that table as much as anyone else.
Here’s what Neil Gaiman has to say about feeling like a fraud:
“On my second or third night, I was standing at the back of the hall, while a musical entertainment happened, and I started talking to a very nice, polite, elderly gentleman about several things, including our shared first name.
And then he pointed to the hall of people, and said words to the effect of ‘I just look at all these people, and I think, what the heck am I doing here? They’ve made amazing things. I just went where I was sent’.
And I said ‘Yes. But you were the first man on the moon. I think that counts for something’.
And I felt a bit better. Because if Neil Armstrong felt like an imposter, maybe everyone did”.

3. You can make a difference
Now that you’ve reaffirmed to yourself that you deserve a seat amongst the big players, it’s time to show them what you bring to the table.
You can make a difference in the following ways:
- Show up to the office on time
- Be positive. Initiate new ideas
- Speak up during meetings
- Focus on issues not personalities
- Ask for feedback
- Help keep the office clean
- Teach a co-worker
These changes might seem like nothing, but they’re the ones that bring about a change of mindset. Change something about yourself this week, however small it might be.
Open the door for a colleague. Hold the elevator. Smile back to people in your office. The greatest changes always come from within.
“If we want to change things, we must first change ourselves. If we want to play – if we want to change the world – we must first show up on the field to score” – Paul Rusesabagina
